On today's episode of P&R we take a trip to France.

http://america.aljazeera.com/articles/2015/1/7/at-least-10-deadinshootingatparissatiricalmagazine.html
Quote:
Gunmen stormed the offices of satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo in central Paris on Wednesday, leaving at least 12 people dead and sparking a massive manhunt for the killers.

Clad all in black with hoods and machine guns and speaking flawless French, the three attackers, who are now believed to be on the run, forced one of the publication's cartoonists, Corinne Rey, who was at the office with her young daughter, to open the door. In an interview with the newspaper L'Humanité, she said the entire shooting, which left 10 journalists and two police officers dead, lasted about five minutes.

Staff members of the magazine, which has courted controversy and the offense of some Muslims for publishing cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad, were in an editorial meeting at the time. The gunmen headed straight for the paper's editor, Stéphane Charbonnier — widely known by his pen name, Charb — killing him and his police bodyguard, said Christophe Crepin, a police union spokesman on the scene.

Minutes later, gunmen were seen walking to a black car waiting below, calmly firing on a police officer, with one of the killers shooting him in the head as he writhed on the ground.

"Hey! We avenged the Prophet Muhammad! We killed Charlie Hebdo," one of the men shouted, according to a video shot from a nearby building and broadcast on French television. The video could not immediately be confirmed by Al Jazeera.

Large numbers of police and ambulances rushed to the scene, where shocked residents spilled into the streets. Reporters also saw bullet-riddled windows and people being carried out on stretchers.

Bernard Cazeneuve, France's interior minister, vowed to "track down the three criminals." He added that "all of our resources will be mobilized so that we can find out who committed this act and make sure they are punished for this act of barbarity." French authorities have said that all school trips and outdoor activities have been canceled while the gunmen are at large.

French President François Hollande headed to the scene shortly after Wednesday's shooting and said that the dead were "cowardly assassinated" and that four others were critically injured. He described the shooting as a "terrorist operation against a newspaper that has been threatened several times." He added that 40 people were being protected in the aftermath of the shooting.

Charlie Hebdo as drawn repeated threats for its caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad, among other controversial features. The newspaper's offices were firebombed in 2011 after a spoof issue featuring a caricature of Muhammad on its cover.

A year later, the magazine published more Muhammad drawings amid an uproar over an anti-Muslim film. The cartoons depicted Muhammad naked and in demeaning or pornographic poses. The French government defended free speech even as it rebuked Charlie Hebdo for fanning tensions.

"We treat the news like journalists. Some use cameras. Some use computers. For us, it's a paper and pencil," the Muhammad cartoonist, who goes by the name Luz, told The Associated Press in 2012. "A pencil is not a weapon. It's just a means of expression."

Charbonnier, among the 10 journalists killed Wednesday, also defended the Muhammad cartoons.

He told Le Monde newspaper two years ago, "I'd rather die standing than live on my knees." One of his last cartoons, published in this week's issue, seemed an eerie premonition. "Still no attacks in France," an extremist fighter says. "Wait — we have until the end of January to present our New Year's wishes."

The attack, for which no one has yet claimed responsibility, comes amid what a number of commentators have identified as rising xenophobia in Europe, with thousands of protesters in several German cities rallying earlier this week against Muslim immigration. France's Muslim population of 5 million is Europe's largest.

"I am extremely angry. These are criminals, barbarians. They have sold their soul to hell. This is not freedom. This is not Islam, and I hope the French will come out united at the end of this," said Hassen Chalghoumi, imam of the Drancy mosque in Paris' Seine-St.-Denis northern suburb.

New York–based advocacy group the Committee to Protect Journalists condemned what its deputy director, Robert Mahoney, called "a brazen assault on free expression in the heart of Europe."

I fear this will only continue to stir the growing xenophobia in Europe against Muslims worldwide. People can keep saying this 'isn't their Islam' but the extremists are the ones dominating the court of public opinion and that can only spell disaster.

Will this be the end of the satire cartoon, or will this be the start of the Cartoon War?

Has anyone else actually seen the cartoons in question? They're not justification for killing, but they are shockingly provocative. I can't imagine them being published in a US magazine. I'm fairly sure I've never seen a depiction of Jesus's *** and flaccid *** here in the US, anyhow.

Kinda makes the dubious controversy about Mohammed showing up in South Park and Family Guy several years ago seem rather pointless by comparison.

Free Expression is a thing. I rather people draw pictures of Mohammed in all manner of provocative poses than see people kill eachother over who the 'one true god' is. If you can't take satire and mockery then come up with your own witty retorts.

Also, I've seen Jesus portrayed in gay sex, as a pizza delivery guy, a bum, hippie, drug addict come the *** on...use google.

Catholics get routinely dragged through the mud, Jews are essentially as demonized as HEIL HITLER and individual sects of Christianity are mocked, berated, slandered, insulted and ridiculed by other religious groups. Welcome to humanity children, take a seat at the table when you're ready.

Remember piss-christ? Feel free to bash the christians or the jews, but muslims are off limits because.... reasons.

I don't think anyone here honestly believes they wouldn't piss off or offend someone in the Muslim religion. Secondly I don't think anyone at the magazine didn't think that either, I mean I'm sure they grasped some extent of the dangerousness of the game they were playing.

My specific question was whether anyone had seen things this provocative in a (mass market) magazine in the US. I'm very aware that Christianity gets everything it deserves and Islam should be in the same boat, but we in the US seem to reserve our mass media desecrations for politicians and businessmen. Hell, Charlie Hebdo's comic about the leader of ISIS today was barely even sarcastic, which says interesting things about their priorities.

Point was more... "We aren't afraid to say that our President is a pig-***, but you opt to mock semi-fictional people and play nice with the real lunatics."

And yet the insane thing is that Islamist whack-jobs are more likely to kill you for thumbing your nose at Mohammed than the guy who orchestrates their daily lives. It's odd.

I'm more worried at the increasing levels of xenophobia sweeping Europe at the moment. Peeps can keep saying 'these aren't real Muslims' till the governments start passing laws and deporting/imprisoning Muslims en masse.

That would be a really dumb argument to make anyways, I mean it's really nothing more than a NTS argument in the end. That said, the issue isn't Muslims anyways, it's fundamentalism/a willingness to take drastic action based on personal ideals or feeling insulted. Unless people realise this and start to use that line of reasoning, we're not going to get anywhere here, we're just going to outcast people based on arbitrary groupings and fail to make any real progress...

So non muslim do terrorist attack and it's called islamist terrorist attack because they are arabic ?

http://mashable.com/2015/01/07/charlie-hebdo-suspects/#:eyJzIjoidCIsImkiOiJfMDhlcHZ0N3llaDFpbzBobjBrb2xtdF8ifQ

tldr: "A 2005 Pittsburgh Tribune Review report, citing Kouachi's lawyer, said the would-be terrorist was not religious, drank alcohol, smoked marijuana, had premarital sex with his girlfriend and had a job delivering pizzas. At the time, Kouachi had learned "the basics" on how to handle Kalashnikovs, Le Monde reported."

Where does it say they're not Muslim? Citing that the suspect was non-religious in 2005 is fairly irrelevant.

That's quite convenient it's funny. They seemed so pro at what they did.

Here is another analysis that assumes that Al-Qaeda did it:

Welcome to a country that is the opposite of US: we're ok with sex, not with violence.

The drawings are supposed to be the most provocative possible while staying within the law. They very well know that they're shocking people, that's the point, and the point is to make the "normal" people laugh. "Normal" people have a good laugh thanks to their drawings, but extremists get pretty butthurt. This would be fine if extremists didn't have the habit to kill people over their own frustration. They're like kids, except they have real weapons now.

Every year, religion has to make sure that we all know that despite the calendar saying 20xx, we're still living in the past, 2 millenniums ago. And it doesn't matter which religion, but for some reason, it's always the same 3 religions that have dangerous extremists. As much as I tolerate religions and actually see positive things in them, I can't help but feel that it's holding humanity back, especially when it kills people who merely drew something.

Muslims are fine, Jews aren't. Drancy's Imam came out and made an interview regarding the event, people are feeling very good regarding what he said, he did a good job to not make most people go full amalgam toward his people.

Jews on the other hand, they're ***, I honestly can't see the next holocaust not happening within 20 years, if not much sooner.
I can't even say if it's deserved or not, it's a very mixed situation, but I can tell you that if you pay attention to what's happening in France since the end of 2013, you cannot say that Jews aren't asking for said second holocaust. It will happen, it's just a matter of time before people get pissed off and we don't need an army to do it, instead all we'll have are citizens going in the streets and *** up anything Jewish beyond repair.

And the "funny" thing in that, neo nazis have nothing to do with that. Jews are literally building their own coffins every single day through medias. Good job Jews, they're the ones that learned the most from 39-45 apparently, not.

"We're ok with sex, not with violence. BTW, KILL THE JEWS!!!!!!!!"

Vraiment?

I noticed you missed the later point I made about Charlie Hebdo being pussies about who to attack. Dead, semi-fictional, pseudo-deity or the lunatic, fringe leader actually responsible... hmm, let's go ahead and piss off the whole population of Islam by denigrating the former instead of isolating and attacking the radical element. Cowardice or stupidity - you decide!
